DETOURS: DOGGONE GOOD
OPTIONS RUN THE GAMUT FOR RAISING THE FAMILY PET
Tamara Holly - For the Journal-Constitution
Thursday, November 13, 2003

CARING FOR YOUR POOCH has taken on new meaning in modern, stressed-out Atlanta. Here are some options for pet parents who want to raise their "kids" in style.

ATLANTA DOG SPA

A 7,000-square-foot outdoor playground with separate fenced areas for mini, medium and large dogs means your pup plays with others of similar stature. Special areas within each size group allow kindred canine spirits (think rambunctious, high-strung or mature) to build confidence at their own comfort level. After working up a sweat outside, dogs can cool down with a dip in the puppy pool. The indoor, climate-controlled living room screens movies like "Snow Dogs," while the pups lounge on sofas. Doggie day care accommodates short- and long-term stays with indoor stables and personalized pampering such as your dog's favorite food (bring it with you), toys or a security blanket.

> THE 411: Daily rates are based on weight, $25-$32. Half-day rate, $12. 707 Edgehill Ave. (across from Atlanta Humane Society), Atlanta. 404-879-1600, www.atlantadogspa.com.

PIEDMONT PARK OFF-LEASH DOG PARK

More than 1.5 acres of (fenced) freedom give city dogs a chance to play on grass and dirt, with rocks and bark. Poop pick-up bags are located throughout the park so that nothing gets left behind.

> THE 411: Free. 6 a.m.-11 p.m. every day. 400 Park Drive N.E. (off Monroe, north of 10th Street), Midtown. 404-875-7275, www.piedmontpark.org.

SPECIALTY SERVICES

DIRTY WORK PROFESSIONAL POOPER SCOOPER: If doggy mines interrupt your backyard barbecues, call in the pros. For about $10 a week, your yard can be yours again. 404-876-9333, www.atlantapooperscooper.com.

ATLANTA PET TAXI: Door-to-door delivery for on-the-go dogs. From vet visits to grooming appointments to airport shuttle service, dogs of all sizes can be chauffeured around the city.

> THE 411: Round-trip travel to the veterinarian, $45. Discounts available for frequent users. 404-915-8243, www.atlantapettaxi.com.
